Our Success Stories

Hyperbaric Case StudiesCase studies analyze what happens when a treatment is administered to actual people. Here are some examples of people treated successfully with hyperbaric oxygen therapy at Richmond Hyperbaric Health Center.

These cases indicate that hyperbaric oxygen therapy not only can improve one’s health condition, but can also improve one’s quality of life.

Anti Aging

Case #1 - D.L. - a 70 year old female began to notice periods of confusion, forgetfulness, agitation, unable to drive her car and live alone. Brain scan showed hypoperfusion in the frontal and temporal lobes. After twenty treatments, the patient returned to a perfectly normal lifestyle. A SPECT scan conducted upon completion of thirteen treatments showed that the improvements remained intact. Two and a half years later the patient continued to do well. Since then, she had three treatments of HBOT as maintenance.

Case # 2 - J.D. - a 79 year old male suffered a stroke and was hospitalized three to four days. For 2 months, he complained of dizziness, problems with memory, pain and stiffness in the neck. A SPECT scan showed multiple areas of hypometabolism with the main deficit seen in the left temporal, occipital zone. After ten Hyperbaric treatments his memory was much improved, pain was relieved and he felt much stronger with increased energy.

Case # 3 - D.F. - a 72 year old female became slightly dizzy, slightly confused and had a left carotid endarterctomy. She appeared to be fine post-operatively and continued working. After a number of months, she became so confused, disoriented, dizzy and weak that she sold her apartment and moved in with her daughter. After four Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatments the symptoms including confusion and dizziness were gone and she was able to live on her own again.

Cerebral Palsy (CP)
Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a brain injury often associated with premature birth, poor circulation and low oxygen tension. This condition can manifest itself by a delay in physical development with high muscle tone (spasticity/hypertonia), low muscle tone (hypotonia), or both. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) can help these complications by increasing the amount of oxygen dissolved in the plasma.
Michael L. 40 yr old diagnosed with CP, symptoms affecting him include: constant fatigue, spasticity in muscle, balance and sometimes speech, after his motor vehicle accident, the symptoms aggravated, especially in the shoulder muscles. After 40 hours of HBOT, he noticed improvement in muscle spasticity, more focused at work, more energy, better balance and better speech control. Click here to watch Michael on Youtube.

Kathy, born October 1996, started HBOT in January 2000 and has received 80 sessions to date.

Kathy received 40 HBOT sessions in January 2000. Before beginning HBOT Kathy was monosyllabic. Her parents had trouble getting her stiff arms into her coat sleeves. After 25 treatments, she was able to turn the pages of a magazine by herself. After returning home she soon learned to ride a tricycle and is now able to speak a string of 5 words at a time. She is learning to speak 2 languages, English and German, and returned for another 40 sessions in February 2001.

Rachel, born in November 1995, started HBOT in March 2000 and has received 50 sessions to date.

Rachel was frustrated when she would stumble and fall over because she lacked balance. After 25 treatments, she was better at walking.  After 40 treatments her attention, visual focus, and concentration improved. Some intestinal problems also resolved and her parents were able to decrease her medication. She received 10 more hbot sessions in October 2000.

Bryce is a six year old with a twin sister.  Prior to coming to the Richmond Hyperbaric Center, he was mostly non-verbal, very spastic and could barely use his walker. In school he used an electric wheelchair. Bryce completed 40 sessions of HBOT in October 2000 and is trying very hard to speak. His vocabulary is greatly improved, and he has developed a real sense of humor. He laughs, is starting to play tricks and is much better with his walker. Bryce received another 50 treatments in 2001 and has learned to ride a bicycle. He is now taking horseback lessons.

Jerret born in April 1992, started HBOT in April 2000 and has completed 40 sessions to date.

Jerret was 8 at the time of his first sessions. On returning home, his therapists noticed more trunk control, less spasticity and improved vocalization. His pediatrician noticed a marked improvement in his head and hands mobility, coordination, and dexterity. His drooling was also reduced. His bowel movements are more controlled. Before the treatments, he needed to be changed two to three times per day. He has had no seizures for two months whereas he previously he had them once every two weeks. The most noticeable improvement has been in his word use and articulation. His vocabulary has increased by over 25 words and he is now completing multiple word sentences more easily and more spontaneously.

He now displays a greater interest in playing with his toys and demonstrates greater visual focus and attention span. His caregivers have decided that based on his progress, they will provide him with the use of a hand controlled switch instead of a head-controlled switch. This will allow Vaughn to better control of his communication equipment. His family returned for a second round of hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments in February 2001.

Childhood Epilepsy - Autism

Kenny has received 20 treatments in July 2001 and another 10 in October 2001. Prior to hyperbaric oxygen therapy Kenny was non-verbal, very agitated, presented with frequent loss of balance which prevented him from walking, extreme episodes of temper tantrums, aggressive behaviour towards others and himself and suffered from seizures. After the first two weeks of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, Kenny was beginning to calm down and became more receptive to requests. He began to sit quietly and participate in hand clapping games and produce sounds from his lips.

Apollo, age 5, suffers from sensory integration disorder and aphasia. Apollo would parrot words back to his mother without any meaning associated with them. Apollo received 40 treatments in September and October 2002. After his first few treatments Apollo amazed his mother and grandmother by speaking his first true sentence. Since then he has been able to show his affection by telling his grandmother he loves her. Apollo was the subject of a local television news broadcast. Click here to watch Apollo on Youtube. Apollo continued to make progress and was later enrolled in regular class. His teachers think he has made big strides after HBOT and believes he can still do better with more oxygen. In 2006 when Apollo returned for more HBOT, he remembers his experience at the clinic and shows his eagerness to get into the chamber.

Alexis, age 8, suffers from autism and learning disabilities. Alexis received 40 treatments in August and September 2002. Alexis has improved to such an extent that she is now enrolled in a regular school.

Chronic pain (RSD/CRPS)
RSD/CPRS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) is a  disturbance of the microcirculation generated by small unmyelinated c nerve fibers in the wall of arterioles. Temperature changes, poor circulation, and neurovascular instability separates this syndrome from the somatic (non-sympathetic) type of painful conditions. The syndrome is aggravated by inflammation and ischemia which can lead to permanent disability.  Hyperbaric oxygen relieves pain, ischemia and  inflammation and is also useful for peripheral nerve repair.

Diane has suffered from chronic Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) for 47 years. The condition has affected her in many ways, she perceived numerous medications and morphine for her pain. After about 30 hours of HBOT treatments, her pain has greatly reduced to a tolerable level. After 60 hours of HBOT treatment, she was able to walk up and down stairs unaided.

He walked to the sailboat with a four-footed cane and was helped into the boat. Earlier this week some movement returned to David's left hand by wiggling his ring finger, his skin problems resulting (from poor circulation) have healed and the color of his legs has returned to normal without any signs of swelling or fungal infection between his toes.

Glenn, age 48, who has CP suffered a stroke in July 2000. He was told by his doctors that he would never move again and should be put in a nursing home.
